Project 1018 - PSI's Rocket Plane
- Single Place Aircraft
- Single Liquid Fueled Rocket Engine
- Flight Demonstration Vehicle
1018 is a tool to gain knowledge and experience required to build 1017. It must be kept as simple as possible. Eliminating the weight of a second person along with the associated safety and environmental systems simplify the entire vehicle. Less size and weight allow the use of engines that are more docile during early test phases.
Why people at all?
A pilot flying an airplane has a romance or 'crowd appeal', if you will, that the biggest, most technically advanced unmanned aerial vehicle just hasnt captured. Then there is the value of having a pilot aboard to observe, feel and interpret phenomenon not programmed into a specific test.
Why a Single Liquid Fueled Rocket Engine?
Liquid fuel is where the performance levels we desire are found with the safety levels we mandate. One engine, one set of systems. Again, this is an effort to keep it simple and keep costs manageable.
Why a Flight Demonstration Vehicle?
Demonstrate is the key word here. PSI wants a vehicle to show the public, not a secret military driven project. A project that can be shared with the public. A project on a grass roots level that will capture public interest and maybe even inspire young people to study technology.
This is an ideal aircraft to display your corporate logo on and to show your support of the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that America has been built upon.
